  • Farewell Europe! Hello Canada!

    Farewell Europe! Hello Canada!

Well, we have another amazing tour of Europe under our belts, a short and fabulous trip to Montreal and back (on ViaRail), another short, adventurous trip to Yarmouth and back, and we’ve just returned from the Road to Stanfest Songwriters Camp and the Stan Rogers Festival. Whew! Let us sit down a moment and catch our breath! Once again, we are overwhelmed with the kindness and generosity of all the incredible people we met along the way. They remind us that this is why we do what we do. Nothing beats seeing smiles on peoples’ faces because of something we shared. Our hearts are full.

There are so many great stories we can share, it’s hard to know where to begin. Hmm. Let’s start with “Will It Feel Like Home”. Robert wrote a beautiful song about refugees inspired by a man we met in Germany on our tour in 2015. He is from Iraq, an engineer, and his wife a dentist and they have two children. Her dental practice was bombed a year or two previous, and shortly after, their house was also destroyed. They fled to Turkey, then eventually made their way to Germany. Their story left an impression on Robert, and when we returned home, and the Paris attacks happened shortly after and one thing after another happened in this crazy world, Robert felt inspired to write this beautiful song. We never thought we’d see that man again, but as fate would have it, he remained in Germany in the town we had first met him. We had the great honour to perform this song for him, when we performed once again with the Millima Mabonde Choir, and cement a new friendship. He was only one of many people we have come to admire and call friend, both at home and abroad. You can’t buy that kind of experience.

Throughout our European tour, and our forays into nearer Canadian locations, we stayed in many different people’s homes, and every one of them were so accommodating and spoiled us with beautiful home-made dishes, treats of chocolate and cakes, playing tour guides in their home towns showing us the sights, along with great beer, wine and excellent conversation.

We also played in many different and unique venues, from farm houses to churches, towers to empty spaces between old buildings, pubs to living rooms. On the few days we had time off in Europe, we splurged and went to see the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam (Cailin was in heaven!), stopped in at the Rock & Pop Museum in Grunau (courtesy of the Millima Mabonde Choir!), saw a bit of Mannheim, Heidleburg, Aachen, Munster and a whole lot of the Autobahn travelling from gig to gig. Man, some of those Lambourginis go fast! During our days off at home, of course, we had more domestic things to do to occupy our time, like mowing the lawn, weeding the garden, and all those things that come with owning a house.

    Burg Eltz, Germany

Road food certainly left an impression on us, some great, some not so great – a musician’s life. We ate a ton of bratwurst and brotchen (rolls) and chocolate, drank great beer while in Europe, and tried our best to eat salad and vegetables whenever they appeared. Getting back into our old habits of eating healthy is proving to be a bit difficult.

    What’s Ahead?

After over 22 gigs around the Maritimes this summer (see below), including the Yarmouth Coal Shed Festival and the Tay Creek Festival north of Fredericton, we’ll be boarding ViaRail once more in September to play on the train from Halifax to Vancouver and back in the fall. We are currently filling in dates for our BC and Alberta Tour, and we’ll be on the road again for 6 to 7 weeks. If you have a living room that can accommodate 25 to 50 people, or know of a venue that welcomes singer/songwriters, please let us know!

So, life is pretty good right now! We are selling our house so we can do more of what we love, which is connecting with people around the world. If you know of anyone who would like to buy a fantastic house across the street from a golf course in Nova Scotia, point them our way!

And believe it or not, we are already booking gigs in Germany for next May 2018! How cool is that! Campbell + Green are now booking a year in advance. Holy smokes! Better get recording that new album…

    In Closing

We want to remind everyone, that no matter how old you are, it’s never too late to start doing what you love. Cailin is taking on a few more guitar and vocal students and there is still room in her choir for those ladies who love to sing and have fun. If you think you’re too old… tell that to Cailin’s 85 year old guitar student! He’s having a great time learning guitar for the first time. Robert and Cailin are in their 50s and 60s and have decided that life is too short doing what you don’t love, so they are selling their house, minimizing, and doing all they can to better their songwriting and performance, and touring as much of the world as they can while they can because there is no price or substitute for the experiences their music takes them to. Don’t wait another minute! Get out there and start doing what you love. It’s worth it!

  • News and Free Music

    News and Free Music

Oh, where to begin. Now that Spring is just around the corner, there is soooooo much to do to get ready for our upcoming touring season. And if that wasn’t enough already, we decided to put our house on the market, too. AAAaaaggghhh! What were we thinking?

But it’s all good. We’ve been busier than a beehive these last few weeks, making repairs and touch ups around the house, cleaning it up ‘right some good’ for prospective buyers (and realizing how much we’ve accumulated in the last 5 years since moving here… how does that happen?).

In addition, we’ve been writing a business and marketing plan to help us in our quest for music grants (we made how much and spent how much???). Who knew that writing a business plan could be so difficult? But, we’re nearly done and ready to submit for a couple different grants to help offset some of the costs of touring. Going to Europe isn’t cheap! Neither is going out west, but it’s what we love to do, so we’re going to make it happen.

And yes, we’re giving away our three newly recorded tunes! We have decided to make our new EP “2 of Hearts” absolutely free to anyone and everyone who wants it. Why? Well, we’ve done a lot of soul searching and we think our vision statement says it best (Can you tell we’ve been writing a business plan?).

“The vision of Campbell + Green is to make a contribution to humanity, to be advocates for all-inclusiveness, to heal intolerance by bringing people together through music, if even for a short time. Their vision is to continue to write songs that inspire and touch people’s hearts, and to link whole communities with each other, without preaching, through their music and performance.”

Whew, pretty deep, eh? We get that way sometimes.

But, seriously, we truly believe that music heals and can bring people together. Music does not discriminate, and neither do we. So, to show our gratitude to YOU, our friends, fans and family, please accept this gift, from our hearts to yours. And how do you get a copy of the aforementioned EP? Simple!

and click on the link at the top of the page. If you wish to repay us in some way, please share this or sign up for our quarterly newsletter – the first one is coming out shortly. We’d love to stay in touch and make sure you get any other perks we offer along the way.

Anyway, better get back to it. Once the business plan is done, we need to get pretty heavy into rehearsals, writing new tunes, figuring out all the details of travel, accommodations, etc., booking more gigs across Canada, booking lots of gigs across Canada (help! Any ideas for concerts, house concerts?), selling, packing, moving, downsizing, and yeah, I guess somewhere in there we need to find time to eat and sleep. It’s all good!

    Peace + Love,

    Robert + Cailin

p.s.: Please do share this and our work. It really helps and it means a lot to us.

  • Germany Tour 2015 – Part 6, In the country

Germany Tour 2015 – Part 6, In the country

This, the last installment of our tour photos, is the collection of photos we took on our side visits while traveling from gig to gig. Whenever possible, we avoided the Autobahn and took the spectacularly beautiful country roads through the sweetest villages and lush farmland, stopping to visit as many castles as we could fit in. There was a new wonder around every corner and all we could do was look with wide open eyes and drink it all in. We can’t remember the names of most of these places anymore, but it doesn’t matter. All of Germany was, to us, a vivid and colourful living dream of music, joy and friendship. Until next time!

  • Germany Tour 2015 – Part 5, Koblenz

    Germany Tour 2015 – Part 5, Koblenz

Koblenz was the first town in Germany that we stayed in and also the last, on account of that is where our dear friend, Jessica, lives. She was instrumental in making our tour a success, and for that, we are eternally grateful. Koblenz is at the junction of the two rivers, the Mosel and beautiful Rhine. We were fortunate to have a day to drive up the Rhine river looking for castles and taking tours and, yes, having a ‘bier’. Not a difficult thing to do since there are castles everywhere in Germany (as well as good bier!). Even though it was a grey, rainy day, we thoroughly enjoyed our exploring and discovered some spectacular sights along the way. And thank goodness for GPS. That’s all we’re saying…

  • Germany Tour 2015 – Part 4, Hameln

    Germany Tour 2015 – Part 4, Hameln

The town of Hamlin (English spelling), or Hameln (German spelling), very much seems as though it has sprung out of a fairy tale story. In fact, the story of the Pied Piper originated in this town and there is evidence of that all over the place, from bronze rats in the pavement to decorative motifs on the buildings. Once again, it was the people who made this visit so special. Our hosts, who graciously organized a wonderful house concert for us in their home, outdid themselves in showing us (in a very short amount of time) highlights that few ‘tourists’ would have the opportunity to see. Case in point: climbing up the spiral stone bell tower of a thousand year old church, then traversing the bat infested attic and climbing the rest of the way up the steeple to a view that was beyond stunning and breathtaking. Sigh. We must return.

  • Germany Tour 2015 – Part 3, Berlin

    Germany Tour 2015 – Part 3, Berlin

One of the most valuable things we learned on this trip was that any place we go it is made more enjoyable by the people you meet. We loved Berlin due to the fact that we were able to meet with wonderful friends who took the time to show us some of their favourite places. The old ‘East Berlin’, a great vegetarian restaurant, the incredible Templehof Airport redevelopment and their favorite walking tour. Simply a wonderful day!

  • Germany Tour 2015 – Part 2, Hamburg

    Germany Tour 2015 – Part 2, Hamburg

We were fortunate, on this tour, to have a sun-filled day in Hamburg around which we walked a LOT! All day, in fact. It’s rich history of shipping, mercantile and music was everywhere to be seen. The port of Hamburg leads to the north sea and has been a commerce hub of Europe for centuries. Robert was thrilled to see the amazing church and pipe organ that Handel and Bach once played, and the ferry, which is part of the public transit system, provided us with a great sightseeing adventure.

  • Germany Tour 2015 – Part 1, Munster

    Germany Tour 2015 – Part 1, Munster

Our very first concert in Germany was in a small town called Havixbeck in the Munster area. The venue was a sweet little museum of artifacts made of local sandstone, which was one of the primary sculpting mediums for the old churches in that area. The countryside was so beautiful, we stayed on an extra day to explore the area before having to head over to our next gig in Altenberge, at the Cafe Sculptura. Also included in this album are photos from a side trip we made while in Hamburg, which was our next stop on this trip, to a town called Ahrensburg, where we visited a lovely ‘water castle’ (castle with a moat). As you can see from the photos, we met some amazing people and had some wonderful experiences. I mean, how many tourists get to ride a horse with a spectacular moustache through the streets of a town in Germany? And to sample the amazing food prepared by one of our fabulous hosts? Photos from Hamburg will come next. Stay tuned. (Also included is a pic of one of the several press clippings we had in the Munster newspaper – can’t wait to go back!)

  • Golden Versailles

    Golden Versailles

When the Musée d’Orsay was closed due to a strike (it is France after all 🙂 ), and the Louvre was closed because it was a Tuesday (aren’t all international renowned tourist attractions closed on Tuesdays?), and because we only had one day left to see anything in Paris before we were expected in Germany to begin our music tour, we opted for spending the next day at the Palace of Versailles. This visit was definitely one of the highlights of our trip. We were absolutely awestruck by Versailles magnificence. Here are a few photos of that magical place. Enjoy!

  • Paris

    Paris

These are photos of our experience and the beautiful things we saw in Paris this past October. Even then, we saw a military presence in busy public places like train stations and museums. Although a wee bit disconcerting, it certainly didn’t take away from the beauty that surrounded us – the art, the architecture, and especially… the people. We loved Paris and would go back there in a heartbeat.

We were remarking to each other today how interesting it was to finally see the Eiffel Tower close up and in person. Even though we grow up seeing pictures of the iconic structure, nothing prepares you for the actual experience. To stand underneath and look up at the immensity of it, the whole thing lit up against the night sky, truly is awe-inspiring. Something, I think, only the best of the best photographers can really capture. For what it’s worth, here is my feeble attempt. ~ Cailin

    (p.s. – I don’t think this is feeble at all. – Robert)

CTV Christmas Daddies and photos of France

UPDATED – Added Video – We’re really looking forward to performing on the CTV Christmas Daddies Telethon on December 5th. This is a great fundraiser supported by volunteers from CTV and the community. Funds raised will support local programs in the area and help less fortunate children living at home with their families, all of whom are facing economic or unusual circumstances. We are proud to be a small part of it this year and singing “A Children’s Winter” (writer: Dermot O’Reilly)

And… Cailin has sorted out the photos from our few days in Luçon and Noirmoutier on the coast of France. There is a road to the island of Noirmoutier that is only accessible at low tide. Very interesting. Our friends are the parents of our International Exchange student who lived with us for three months in Maple Ridge. They were amazing hosts and showed us the very best of France. Can’t wait to go back! These photos will open in a slide show which you can scroll through. Enjoy!

NS Music Week, Concert and Glasgow photos…

Phew!! We’re back! Our tour through Germany and visits with friends and family in the UK & France were awesome. As we get over our jet lag, we are looking ahead to more music, and looking back over the trip reminiscing over all the wonderful experiences and the people who made those experiences wonderful.

Moving forward, we are excited to announce that we have been granted a showcase at Nova Scotia Music Week with the chance to meet delegates from Germany and Austria.
Saturday, November 7th at 4:15 PM we will be playing at Rudders in Yarmouth, NS. Come say hello if you’re out for the celebrations, and wish us luck for getting some buyers interested in our music!

We also have a concert booked on the way up to Yarmouth and a couple more after that. Check our listings to find the one nearest you: Click here:

About the trip… what did we love? EVERYTHING! But truly, it was the people we met along the way that made it truly special. We fell in love with Paris. We fell in love with the French food. We fell in love with the German countryside. And we fell in love with the people. 🙂 We have lots of stories and we learned a ton, and can’t wait to do it again. Over the coming winter months, we will be writing new material and Cailin will be working in her art studio as well as teaching vocals, beginner guitar, and art classes.

Below are pics from the day we spent in Glasgow. There are many pics to show you, so we will load them up in groups over time. Next to come… London!
